CANTERBURY, WAITAHA FLOCKHILL HOMESTEAD BY WARREN AND MAHONEY ARCHITECTS “Looking northward to Lake Pearson and the surrounding mountainous landscape, this high-end hospitality offering takes its cues from local farm buildings. Robust and durable coloured in-situ concrete, cast in striated layers, anchors the collection of buildings to the site. Although concrete is high in carbon, this is tempered by extensive use of locally sourced timbers on walls and ceilings. Public and private spaces are well defined, and a large farmhouse-style kitchen offers either groups or individual guests opportunities to meet and connect over meals. A lazy gabled roof form with a fine outer edge and highly detailed sheltering verandahs suggest rest and repose.
