To best understand Wharton Esherick, look no further than his Pennsylvania home and studio, built by hand between 1926 and 1966. The American artist, woodworker, and father of the Studio Furniture movement lovingly called the place “an autobiography in three dimensions.” The delightfully wonky structure—centered around the hand-carved spiral staircase shown—is now the subject of The Crafted World of Wharton Esherick (Rizzoli), a new book revisiting the house and its contents through fresh photography, scholarship, and eyes. The tome accompanies a traveling exhibition of his work, which debuted at the Brandywine Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, on October 13.
