To update a Federal-era house in Connecticut for her young family, designer Lauren McGrath does her research

Only after poring over dozens of books on American folk art and Federal architecture did Lauren McGrath land on the motif for her Connecticut entry hall. Translating an original stenciled pattern into a subdued palette of blue and cream, McGrath says, “set the tone and the color story for the house.” That in-depth research is evident throughout the home: an 1804 white-clapboard structure, set within rock-skipping distance of the Long Island Sound, that she shares with her husband, Chris Lospalluto, a celebrity hairstylist, and their two young sons. But the approach is also emblematic of McGrath II, the Manhattan-based decorating firm that she helms with her mother, Suzanne.
