AMD bets its CPU future on the new Zen 5 architecture

A look at what’s under the hood of what AMD refers to as a foundational architecture.

OPINION | TWO BITS Recently I was invited to attend a briefing on AMD’s Zen 5 architecture. The short version is that AMD is confident Zen 5 delivers both increased performance and better efficiency. Though we’ll have to wait a little to see exactly how the chips perform, we now have a good idea of where Zen 5’s 16% average IPC gain comes from. At Computex 2024, AMD announced the Ryzen 9000 series desktop CPUs and Ryzen AI 300 mobile APUs. Both are set to launch in July. The Ryzen 9000 series is codenamed Granite Ridge. Architectural improvements aside, the new models are physically similar to their Ryzen 7000-series predecessors, with up to two Core Complex Dies (CCDs) and a separate I/O die.
