Larian’s ambitious RPG has begged the question: can other studios compete?

Is Baldur’s Gate 3 too good? That was a matter sincerely debated in August when, to the surprise of everyone except CRPG enthusiasts, Larian’s new fantasy game hit the big time with critics and mainstream audiences alike. The discussion was triggered by game developer and writer Xalavier Nelson Jr., who correctly pointed out in a tweet that the scale and technical ambition of Baldur’s Gate 3 is not likely to become a new “baseline” for what players can expect from RPGs.
