Nvidia does it again. Mark Williams looks through the marketing to find the truth.

From the front lines of the Australian PC market Nvidia recently hosted its 2024 GPU Technology Conference and made some big announcements that will shape the future of computing over the next few years for companies needing AI hardware. Nvidia’s current top end AI GPU; the H100, based on Nvidia’s AI specific Hopper architecture, is capable of around four petaflops of throughput. CEO Jenson Huang announced that Nvidia will be bringing its new Blackwell architecture to GB200 enabling throughput of an amazing 20 petaflops of performance. As usual, Nvidia’s metrics from its marketing department are very selective and show only the best performance uplifts in extreme situations, and don’t tell the whole story.
