Another of OpenSSH’s joyous treasures is that it can be used as a SOCKS proxy. This isn’t the same as a VPN; it works at the session level rather than the transport level. But it does enable traffic to be tunneled over an encrypted connection and it does obfuscate the client IP address, which is certainly part of what a VPN does.
If you have a remote machine that you’re already in the habit of SSHing into, then to achieve this SOCKS magic, instead of your usual incantation, add the following:
$ ssh user@myserver.com -D 3128
This will send traffic from port 3128 on the local machine to the proxy (you can use any available port number). Also, the -D option can be activated from the internal shell we mentioned…
