How much faster is a GPU?

It’s impossible to put a figure on the benefits of a GPU. There’s a wide range of different models on the market, for both desktop and laptop systems, and lots of different CPUs to compare them to.

Needless to say, different tasks also see considerably different benefits. To illustrate what you might experience, however, we carried out three benchmarks on a Windows desktop system equipped with a Core i7-8700K processor, 16GB of RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti graphics card. The CPU features six cores with a base clock speed of 3.7GHz, while the card has 4,804 CUDA cores running at 1.7GHz, plus 152 tensor cores and 38 ray-tracing cores. For our first test, we downloaded the open-source 4K movie Tears of Steel, imported it into DaVinci Resolve Studio, reorganised some scenes to create our own “director’s cut” then timed how long it took to render the output as a 1080p H.265 file, using first Nvidia CUDA acceleration, and then Intel’s CPU-based Quick Sync encoder.…
