For those lucky enough to work from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, video conferencing has become a central part of our lives. While many have used the likes of Google Meet and Microsoft Teams for ages, somehow a lesser known video conferencing app called Zoom has become the go-to service in 2020 – so much so that the word Zoom itself has become shorthand for video chat. The app’s star rose unexpectedly in February, but it wasn’t long before experts started to poke around. In late March, Motherboard found that Zoom was secretly sharing data with Facebook – even for users without a Facebook account.
