Tech and social media is rushing to adjust to a new Trump era

Mark Zuckerberg’s new Meta social media policies are just a portent of dramatic changes to come, writes Shaun Prescott.

The new year kicked off with Donald Trump’s second presidential inauguration and along with it, a whole lot of pragmatic but nevertheless embarrassing corporate kowtowing. Amazon, Meta, Google, OpenAI, and reportedly Apple’s Tim Cook, all made generous donations. None did in 2017. Whereas Trump’s 2016 election victory might have seemed like a dark aberration, his second victory marks an irreversible change for America and thus the world. Tech billionaires know this, and are rushing to adapt to the new conditions. The most obvious example came via Meta. Wasting no time, the company announced sweeping changes to its content moderation policies the day after Trump’s inauguration. Third party fact-checking will cease, and crowdsourced fact-checking (similar to the Community Notes on Twitter/ X) will commence. Restrictions will be lifted on a range…
