AI generated music is storming streaming services, and it’s messy

Spotify is increasingly flooded with low-effort AI ambient music, and it’s an existential problem in more ways than one, writes Shaun Prescott.

OPINION | END USER What do musicians Paul Beruf, Harry Mousnier and Ambient Dave all have in common? They’re all broadly “ambient” music, a genre taking in everything from Brian Eno’s seminal works to field recordings of birdsong. The other commonalities these artists share is that Spotify’s recommendation algorithm thinks I’ll enjoy them, and that none of them – so far as I can tell – are real. It was the Harry Mousnier that piqued my interest at first: a melancholy, drone-like ambience accompanied by an eerie pitch-shifted male voice. I thought it sounded interesting, so I looked it up.
