AI’s energy demands is causing problems for big tech

Powering datacentres is energy-intensive, and no one has yet proven that it’s towards a worthy cause, writes Shaun Prescott.

OPINION | END USER If you’ve come within spitting distance of a piece of technology in 2024 you’ll have noticed that no interface is safe from the puzzling incursion of AI “helpers”. Microsoft’s Windows 11 Copilot probably comes to mind first, but Google’s new AI search feature – which has yet to roll out in Australia – has won the most infamy thanks to its sometimes bizarre answers (yes: you should use glue to secure cheese to a pizza base). Meanwhile, Apple’s Siri will have ChatGPT weaved into it later this year. Meanwhile, browse Facebook and it’s clear that very many scammers and propagandists have conscripted AI image generation towards their wily ends, resulting in an onslaught of uncanny slop.
