The advent of warfare in the southern Levant

Two caches of slingstones have been found in Israel. Dating to the first part of the Chalcolithic period, ca. 5800–4500 BC, these caches provide the earliest evidence yet discovered for warfare in the southern Levant. In total, over 400 slingstones were discovered from the sites of ‘En Esur and ‘En Zippori. In a paper published in ‘Atiqot 111, the size, weight, and shape of the slingstones were studied, with the authors concluding that the slingstones were created as part of a standardized creation process, suggesting preparation for war. Such finds are not wholly unusual but they have never been found in such numbers before.
