This tombstone of a sailor from the praetorian imperial fleet (a classiarius, pl. classiarii) found near Misenum in Italy is typical of similar tombstones in remembering the ethnic origins of the deceased. In this case, Caius (or Gaius) Annius Draco came from Egypt. The freedwoman and his heiress who set up the tombstone, Annia Dionysias, reminds us of his origins. The inscription reads: “To the spirits of the dead. Annia Dionysias, freedwoman and heiress, made (this) well-deservingly for Caius Annius Draco, a veteran from the praetorian naval fleet at Misenum, from the province of Egypt. He lived 60 years.
