Scarab seal may prove Assyrian rule in the Galilee

The engraving on the domed obverse of an accidentally discovered carnelian stone was clearly a scarab. The flat reverse, however, appeared to be a mythical creature, perhaps a griffin or a Pegasus-like winged quadruped. The scarab seal is difficult to date precisely, but is suggestive of the eighth century BC. Its origins,however, remain mysterious. The significance of its discovery is in its potential implications for understanding ancient administrations in the region. The seal’s proximity to the town of Anaharath (Joshua 19:19) in the Lower Galilee hints at its potential connection to the Assyrian rule of the kingdom of Israel.
