The Praetorian Guard lasted until the early fourth century. In another series of civil wars following the death of Constantius Chlorus in AD 306, the Praetorian Guard sided with the emperor based in Italy, Maxentius, the son of the previous, legitimate emperor, Maximian. Maxentius then used the guard to secure his power in the west until only he and a single rival remained. In 312, Constantine, the son of Constantius Chlorus, marched on Rome. He defeated the Praetorian Prefect, Pompeianus, at Verona and then fought a decisive battle against Maxentius, accompanied by the Praetorian Guard, at the Milvian Bridge north of Rome. It was a complete disaster for Maxentius, he and many of his guard drowning in the River Tiber. As the strongest supporters of Maxentius, the Praetorians were disbanded…
