After Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC, it was revealed in his will that his primary heir, who was to receive three quarters of his property, was his eighteen-year-old nephew, Octavian. Moreover, the will, albeit at the end, stipulated that Caesar had adopted Octavian to be his son. However, it was unsure whether Octavian would accept Caesar’s inheritance. Indeed, his stepfather, Lucius Marcus Philippus, advised him not to. Caesar’s will also contained a clause about nominating guardians for his son, should he have one. Thus, it is possible that he had drawn up his will at a time when he had hoped to have a son of his own, and not just adopted Octavian. Consequently, Cleopatra may have used this clause to try and have Caesarion named Caesar’s heir.…
