The donations of Mark Antony
During his tenure as master of the Roman east during his co-rule with Octavian, Mark Antony deigned to grant control of several Roman vassals and client states to Cleopatra in the elaborate celebrations known as the Donations of Antioch (in 36 BC) and Alexandria (in 34 BC). Antony granted Cleopatra territories including Crete, Cyrene, Cyprus, Cilicia, Syria, Armenia, and Phoenicia, increasing Ptolemaic holdings to their greatest extent in over 200 years. He also promised her the still-unconquered Parthia. During this time, Cleopatra took on the title Queen of Kings, signifying her imperial ambitions. While Mark Antony’s enemies, especially Octavian, could present these donations as being the result of Cleopatra’s manipulation of Antony, they were in keeping with previous Roman policy, and part of an ongoing reorganization of Rome’s eastern territories…
