Hellenistic temple found on older Sumerian site

Two temples have been found in the ancient Sumerian city of Girsu. What makes them remarkable is that the Hellenistic structure is built on top of a much older Sumerian temple. Archaeologists from the British Museum in London uncovered these twin structures at Tello in southeastern Iraq as part of The Girsu Project supported by the J. Paul Getty Trust. The dating of the Hellenistic-period temple, linked to Herakles, was confirmed by the find of a silver drachma coin found beneath an altar. Also found was a unique brick inscription written in Greek and Aramaic bearing the Babylonian name Adadnadinakhe (‘Adad, the Giver of Brothers’).
