Plato's gravesite revealed in a carbonized papyrus

Using cutting-edge imaging technology to read a carbonized papyrus scroll, researchers claim to have uncovered evidence of where Plato was buried. The scroll is part of the famed collection of Herculaneum scrolls, “the only large-scale libr the classical world that has survi entirety,” according to the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, it represents a treasure trove of knowledge of the Classical world. Using infrared and X-ray scanners enabled researchers to read the scrolls without physical contact. They have identified over 1000 new words from one of the Herculaneum papyri, including significant passages from the History of the Academy authored by philosopher Philodemus (110–35 BC).
