Double burial in Austria reassessed

The remains of two bodies were excavated in 2004 in Wels, Austria in what was the eastern cemetery of the Roman town of Ovilava. The two adults were buried at the same time, with an arm of 'Individual 1' around 'Individual 2', laid over the body of a horse. As such burials with horses were common in the Medieval period, the grave was first believed to have held two lovers from the Early Medieval period. However, new radiocarbon dating of the human and horse skeletons placed the group in the Roman period. Ancient DNA (aDNA) analysis of the human remains revealed that the individuals were two biological females who were first-degree relatives, with an age difference of fifteen to 25 years.
