2500-year-old shipwreck located off Sicily

A shipwreck, dating back to the sixth to fifth centuries BC, has been discovered off the coast of Sicily. The 2500-year-old wreck was found near the town of Ispica, in the waters of Santa Maria del Focallo, by archaeologists conducting an underwater excavation project. The sea around the island was treacherous to ancient commercial ships and their crews. Several wrecks have been identified. The ship’s hull, uncovered after being buried under sand and rocks, was built using an ‘on-the-shell’ construction technique, an early method of shipbuilding common in Mediterranean cultures. Using photogrammetry techniques, archaeologists have created a 3D model of the wreck and are conducting analyses on the materials found, hoping to better understand the ship’s construction and its historical context.
