Meet volunteers around the country who are making life better for creatures big and small

Who she is As a child, Chris Barnes always wanted to own a horse. “I entered so many essay contests trying to win a horse!” she says. Today, after retiring from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, she volunteers with Therapeutic Horses of Saratoga (THS). “I thought it was a great time to follow my passion for horses and learn some new skills.” What she does THS is a nonprofit sanctuary located in Saratoga Springs, New York—also home to a famous thoroughbred racetrack. The organization rescues horses after they can no longer race and trains them to assist in equine therapy.
