To date, mankind has managed to send just one object beyond the boundary of our own Solar System. Voyager 1 received gravity assists from both Jupiter and Saturn that boosted its speed to over 61,000 kilometres (38,000 miles) per hour, but it still took 35 years to spiral outwards into interstellar space, 20 billion kilometres (12 billion miles) away. At this speed, Voyager 1 would take another 75,000 years to reach our nearest star, Proxima Centauri. That’s because 61,000 kilometres (38,000 miles) per hour is actually very slow. It’s just 0.005 per cent of the ultimate speed limit for the universe: the speed of light.
