However, many cosmologists are not yet convinced that there was anything before the Big Bang. Lawrence Krauss is one such scientist and he’s developed a theory of ‘quantum nothingness’ from which the universe could have originated. The theory involves so-called ‘virtual particles’, which flit in and out of existence for fractions of a second in empty space. They are predicted by quantum theory and their effects can be observed.
