KENNEDY JFK became president in 1960 for the Democrat Party. He aimed to end racial segregation in schools and public places and liberalised immigration laws. He strengthened unemployment benefits and called on the nations of the world to band together to fight poverty, hunger and disease. He also urged Americans to be active citizens, famously saying, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” With his presidency at the height of the Cold War, Kennedy was a vehement anti-Communist.
