A VIKING BURIAL

THE VIKINGS believed in the afterlife and so they buried their dead with all kinds of objects that might be needed in the next world. Prized weapons, tools, clothes and jewellery were all common grave goods. Ordinary people were buried in simple graves, often beneath an earth mound, but wealthier Vikings were frequently buried in boats or ships to carry them safely to the afterlife. Sometimes the vessel was set alight and burnt in a funeral pyre. Animals and even slaves were sacrificed and buried with important Vikings. A ship fit for a Queen In 1903, archaeologists uncovered a beautiful ship at the Oseberg burial mound near Oslo in Norway.
