SAGAS AND LEGENDS

THE VIKINGS loved to tell each other thrilling legends of gods and monsters, and tales of heroic warriors and battles. Some stories recounted the adventures of kings while others were gripping accounts of ordinary families. The legends weren’t written down by the Vikings themselves – it was not until the thirteenth century that writers began to record these stories in books called sagas. The Story of Burnt Njal This famous saga about an Icelandic family has much to tell us about Viking beliefs. Honour was all-important and minor disagreements could result in years of bloodshed. The tale is about two friends Gunnar and Njal. Their close friendship is tested when Gunnar, a powerful warrior, marries an evil widow who begins a deadly feud with Njal’s wife.
