IN VIKING myths, the god Loki had three monstrous children: the wolf Fenrir, the dreadful goddess Hel, and Jormungand, a giant serpent also known as the Midgard Serpent. Even the gods were afraid of Jormungand, and Odin decided to get rid of this terrible creature by tossing it into the ocean. Here the serpent grew so large that eventually it encircled the entire world. Sailors venturing across the seas were ever fearful that the Midgard Serpent would rise up from the ocean depths and crush their ships in its massive jaws or destroy them with its deadly venom.…
