IN VIKING times, family ties were strong. A man was head of his household, but women took charge when their husbands were away. Children didn’t go to school, but instead helped in the fields and with cooking, weaving and spinning. Families and communities needed to provide for themselves, and children learnt important skills from a young age.
Over a thousand years have passed since this buckle fastened a warrior’s belt. Made of bronze and dulled by the passing centuries, it was likely once decorated to show its owner’s importance. Robert Macleod

The style of clothing changed very little during the Viking age. Men wore woollen trousers and linen shirts, and over these a longsleeved tunic and belt. When the weather was cold, heavy cloaks and furs kept them warm. Viking women…
