RUNES

THE VIKINGS developed a way of writing using marks or letters called runes. The 16 letters were made up of straight and diagonal lines so that brief messages could easily be carved into stone, bone and wood. The Viking alphabet was known as “futhark” after the first six sounds. Glorious battles and heroic warriors were celebrated in memorial stones known as rune stones, which have been found across the Viking world. The word “runes” means something secret or hidden, and Vikings thought runes had their own powerful magic.…
