JARLS AND KARLS

VIKING SOCIETY was divided into three main classes. At the top of the social pyramid was the king along with noble landowners called “jarls”. Beneath the jarls were the “karls” or “freemen” who were usually farmers, merchants, craftsmen or warriors. The lowest of the low were the slaves known as “thralls”. Slaves had no rights at all – they could be bought and sold like property, and were often captured in raids and battles. Kings and kingdoms In early Viking times, Scandinavia was divided into small kingdoms ruled over by local kings and jarls. Rulers were expected to protect their communities but often struggled to keep power.
