IN VIKING times, most people were farmers and hunters who lived in the countryside. Animals such as sheep, pigs and cows were raised for food and milk, and crops such as barley and wheat were grown. Conditions in the Viking homelands could be very difficult – the weather was often bitterly cold and in Norway there was a lack of good farmland. This is one of the reasons why the Vikings left their shores in search of new lands. Town life Viki ng settlements grew up near rivers and the sea where ships could be easily loaded. Some trading centres such as Hedeby in Denmark and Dubli n in Ireland b ecame bustling towns. The narrow, muddy streets would have been crowded and noisy, lined with houses and market stalls…
