LEIF ERIKSON

PERHAPS ONE of the most famous explorers of all time, Leif Erikson is remembered in the sagas as a daring hero. Travelling across the stormy Atlantic Ocean, he became the first European to reach North America around 1002 ad. Fellow Vikings believed that Leif was surely favoured by the gods. The sagas tell that on one sea voyage Leif rescued a shipwrecked crew, which earned him the name “Leif the Lucky”. The Land of Wine Leif grew up hearing about the famed land that lay west of Greenland. As soon as he was able, the young explorer gathered a crew together to retrace Bjarni’s route.
