THE VIKINGS were fearless explorers, leaving the safety of their shores to travel thousands of miles in search of new lands. These adventurers were mainly from Norway where there was a shortage of good farmland. As they braved the icy waters of the North Atlantic, many crews and ships were lost in terrible storms, but this didn’t stop the Vikings reaching Iceland, Greenland and eventually North America. The Vikings in Iceland The first settler to arrive on the volcanic island of Iceland was a Norwegian called Ingol f Arnars on. He took his family there around 874 AD and built a large farm on a bay.
