RAIDING THE WEST

IN 793 AD, Viking warriors ran their longboats ashore on Lindisfarne (an island off the east coast of England) and attacked the Christian monastery there. Terrified, the monks desperately tried to fend off the Vikings, but they were brutally slaughtered and the buildings left in ruins as the warriors escaped with the monastery’s treasures. This was the start of the Vikings’ long reign of terror across Europe. Viking conquerors At first, the Vikings fought in small groups raiding easy coastal targets during the summer months.
