THE PILOTS

The life of a pilot during the Battle of Britain had much in common on both sides of the conflict. Both air forces were an elite, more highly trained than almost any other units in the armed forces. Compared with an army, the numbers involved in flying and fighting during the Battle of Britain were tiny. The squadron organization put together small numbers of men who had to work as a team to be successful. Losses of squadron members made it necessary to create a system where newcomers could be integrated into established fighting units.
