DOWDING VERSUS GOERING

There was a striking contrast between the two commanders who faced each other for the Battle of Britain in the summer of 1940. Hugh Dowding was effectively commander of the defensive battle, although he was also responsible to the chief of the air staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Cyril Newall and, from October 1940, (acting) Air Chief Marshal Sir Charles Portal. Hermann Goering, promoted to Reich Marshal by Hitler in July 1940 as a reward for the success of the air force in the conquest of France, was the German commander-in-chief for the air campaign against Britain.
