Bereits in der Antike fertigten die Griechen und Römer kunstvolle Kästchen an, um darin ihr Wertvoll stes zu verwahren. Im 17. Jahrhundert wurden der Eitelkeit dann ganze Möbel gewidmet: Die Hautevolee gab aufwändige Sonderanfertigungen in Auftrag, sogenannte Vanity Furniture, um sich für Soireen und opulente Bälle mit ihren exquisitesten Juwelen zu schmücken. Die französische „Poudreuse“ oder der „Lowboy“, ein Rasiertisch aus England, waren nun fester Bestandteil der Schlafzimmereinrichtung. Im Art déco der 1920er-Jahre wurde der Frisiertisch end gültig Inbegriff von Glamour: Er verwandelte das Schminken und Schmuckanlegen zu einem theatralischen Akt. Heute ist Eitelkeit verpönt und der bescheidene Auftritt eine wichtige Tugend der Deutschen. Doch haben unsere Erbstücke nicht alle ein Bett aus Samt verdient?…
