Un accès haut débit permet d’obtenir un débit jusqu’à 30 Mbit/s. La quasitotalité de la France y a accès. Pour des débits supérieurs, on parle de très haut débit. Mais il ne s’agit pas toujours d’une ligne en fibre optique jusqu’au domicile de l’abonné (FTTH, ou fiber to the home). Le réseau cuivre prend parfois le relais, souvent dans les immeubles, entre le point de branchement optique et le logement (FTTB, ou fiber to the building), via un câble coaxial.
